Catalan painter, ceramist and graphic artist, a key member of the Surreleasts, Joan Miró i Ferrà trained under Francisco Gali. Miró was fascinated by the challenge of using art as a channel to the subconscious and, from the mid-1920s, he began to fill his canvasses with biomorphic, semi-abstract forms. Nevertheless, he felt suspicious of some of the more outlandish, Surrealist doctrines and remained at the fringes of the group.
